What beginning sounds means

You learn to listen for the first sound in a word and choose a word that begins the same way. This helps you link spoken words to letters and build early reading skills.

You should already know some common letter names and simple spoken words. It also helps if you can say a few sounds clearly.

Common mistakes to avoid

You may listen to the last sound instead of the first sound. Always start from the beginning of the word.
You may mix up the letter name with the sound. Say the sound, not just the alphabet name.
You may choose a word that looks similar but starts differently. Check the first sound carefully.
You may hurry and miss the first sound. Say the word slowly if needed.
