What alphabet knowledge means

You practise saying and spotting letters in the correct order from A to Z. This helps you read simple words later, because you can follow the alphabet and find the next or missing letter.

What you will practise

Name letters in order from the start of the alphabet.
Choose the letter that comes next in a sequence.
Find the letter between two other letters.
Pick the first letter of the alphabet.

Before you start

You should already know some letter shapes and be able to say simple letter names. It also helps if you can listen carefully and match spoken letters to written ones.

Working: The alphabet goes A, B, C - C comes after B.

Common mistakes to avoid

Skipping a letter when saying the alphabet. Say each letter slowly and in order.
Mixing up letters that look alike. Check the shape before you answer.
Choosing the wrong middle letter in a set. Count the letters one by one.
Starting from the wrong place in the alphabet. Remember that A begins the sequence.
