If you are applying to a university in the UK, USA, Canada or Australia — or seeking skilled migration — you will almost certainly need an English proficiency certificate. The three giants are IELTS, TOEFL iBT and PTE Academic. All three are widely accepted, but the right choice depends on how you learn, where you are applying, and how quickly you need results.

Choose IELTS if…
You prefer speaking to a real human examiner, you are applying to the UK, Australia or Canada, or you may also need the General Training version for migration. IELTS remains the most widely recognised test in Commonwealth countries, and its band descriptors are well understood by admissions offices across Africa.
Choose TOEFL if…
You are targeting the USA, feel comfortable with American English and academic lecture-style listening, and prefer typing your essays. TOEFL's reading passages are longer and more academic, which suits strong readers.
Choose PTE Academic if…
You need results fast (often within two days), you are comfortable speaking to a computer, and you want fully objective AI scoring. PTE is accepted by the Australian and New Zealand governments and thousands of universities worldwide.
How hard is each test?
None is inherently "easier" — they measure the same four skills (listening, reading, writing, speaking) in different ways. Most candidates score comparably across tests. What moves your score is targeted practice: knowing the question types, timing yourself and reviewing every mistake with an explanation.
