What letter sounds means

You learn to match each letter with the sound it makes in spoken words. This helps you start reading simple words and choose the right letter in short questions.

What you will practise

Hear a sound and choose the matching letter.
Look at a word and find its first sound.
Pick the word that starts with a given sound.
Match familiar letters to beginning sounds in pictures.

Before you start

You should already know some letter names, such as a, m, and s. You should also be able to listen for the first sound in simple spoken words.

Working: The word man begins with the letter m.

Common mistakes to avoid

Choosing the letter name instead of the sound. Say the sound first and listen carefully.
Mixing up the first sound with another sound in the word. Focus on the start of the word.
Selecting a word that has the sound later, not at the beginning. Check the first sound only.
Confusing similar sounds, such as /m/ and /n/. Say both sounds slowly and compare them.
