What subject-verb agreement means

You choose the correct form of a verb so it matches the subject in a sentence. This helps you write clear, correct English in classwork, tests and everyday writing.

Before you start

You should already know nouns, pronouns and the difference between singular and plural words. It also helps to know the present tense forms of common verbs.

Answer: run

Working: "Dogs" is plural, so it takes the plural verb "run".

Common mistakes to avoid

Using a plural verb after a singular subject. Check the subject first before choosing the verb.
Forgetting that pronouns like she and he take singular verbs. Read the subject carefully.
Choosing a verb by looking at the nearest noun instead of the real subject. Find the main subject in the sentence.
Treating words like neither as plural. Remember that they often take a singular verb.
