What electricity and circuits means

You learn how electric current moves in a circuit and why a closed path is needed. You also see which materials let current pass through easily, so you can understand simple wiring and everyday electrical devices.

Before you start

You should already know that electricity can flow through some materials and not through others. It also helps to know basic circuit parts such as a battery, wire and bulb.

Answer: A complete loop

Working: Current only flows when the circuit is a complete, unbroken loop.

Common mistakes to avoid

Thinking current can flow through a broken circuit. Check for a complete loop before giving an answer.
Choosing any metal as a conductor without checking. Remember that copper is a very good conductor.
Using volts instead of amperes for current. Match the unit to what is being measured.
Confusing the path of current with the switch position. A switch must allow a closed path for flow.
