Common mistakes to avoid

Mixing up an element symbol with a full word. Learn the exact symbol, not the name only.
Thinking any formula is an element. Check whether it has one type of atom or more than one.
Treating water as an element because it looks simple. Remember that H2O has two different elements joined together.
Using lower-case letters wrongly in symbols. Capital letters matter, and some symbols need two letters.
