What length, mass and capacity means

You learn to choose the right unit for everyday things. Small objects like a pencil use centimetres, heavy things like rice use kilograms, and liquids like water use litres.

Working: A pencil is short, so centimetres (cm) are appropriate.

Common mistakes to avoid

Using kilograms for a pencil instead of centimetres. Pick a small length unit for short objects.
Measuring liquids in grams or centimetres. Liquids are measured in litres, not in length or mass units.
Choosing metres for very small objects. Use centimetres when the item is short and easy to hold.
Mixing up grams and kilograms. Use grams for light things and kilograms for heavier things.
