What probability means

You learn how to find the chance of an event as a fraction of all possible outcomes. This helps you make sense of simple chances in games, choices, and everyday situations.

What you will practise

Count the favourable outcomes in a simple event.
Count all equally likely outcomes correctly.
Write probability as a fraction and simplify it.
Find the probability of the opposite event.
Use data from bags, dice, coins, and weather.

Answer: 1/6

Working: A die has 6 equally likely faces, and only one shows 4.

Common mistakes to avoid

Counting the wrong outcomes as favourable. Check the question and name only the matching outcomes.
Forgetting to count every possible outcome. Always use the full sample space in the denominator.
Mixing up the event with its opposite. Read carefully before using 1 minus the probability.
Leaving fractions unsimplified when they can reduce. Divide top and bottom by the same number.
